About
Integrated Design in Emerging Architecture (IDEA) is a 4-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) English language international program offered by the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University. Situated in the oldest higher education institution in the region and surrounded by a culturally and historically vibrant urban backdrop, the program is dedicated to nurture students' critical thinking and independent design capabilities with the knowledge of the latest digital design and fabrication skills that are increasingly being sort-after in the architectural and design community both locally and overseas.
With a particular focus on innovation and experimental design, the 4-year curriculum aims to ground up students' architectural design knowledge from an interdisciplinary approach that include social, physical, life sciences and beyond. Throughout their studies, students will integrate diverse design values from a wide range of creative design industries, whilst the unit system in each year offer varies opportunities for students to investigate and develop their creative thinking process behind their production outcomes. The program is formulated from the belief in creative design values that lead to the core of any principles in design businesses that require an innovative thinking approach.
As Chiang Mai is emerging to become a key player in the local and global creative industry, the IDEA course is perfectly suited to provide its graduates with the best opportunities to develop a successful creative design career and become future leaders in these lines of design-value-oriented businesses. Furthermore, the program is constructed in the dialectic forms of knowledge and practice with creative experimentations in order for students to understand the value process of architectural and spatial design. The program will give special emphasis on teaching, training and communication in English, with a dedicated team of international design academics and practitioners and the opportunity to take part in internship abroad in the latter part of the course in order for students to build the best design thinking foundation for their further studies and interests after graduation.

Study Plan
Year1 (First Year)
The Year of preparation on “Self” (re) assessment on issues of Human/ Body and the Realm of spatial surroundings. With the teaching method of self-interrogation asking questions on our built environment and the relationship between Space-Time-Body. Basic skills of drawing from mind and thinking process are the main keys for this year including the understanding of history of creative arts and architecture both in Eastern and Western worlds. The students will learn how to start his/her own way of approaching Space Design and try to challenge their spatial interventions through experiencing and experimentations.
Year2 (Intermediate1)
The second year main core studio will focus on the issue of “Atmosphere” where space and time meet with countless of sensorial experiences given the meanings and metaphoric connotations. The students will be explore unique/distinct places and sites to start his/her experiences and re-interpret through their thinking process. By learning many mediums of presentations and representations, this year of IDEA studio will have one of a kind approach towards architectural space-time. The trips to compliment the studio and related subjects are also keys of teaching/learning within this year. Thus, the boundary of understanding space and atmosphere goes beyond “self-ness” from Year1 plus the learnings of basic knowledges of Materials and Constructions as well as Building Systems and Structural design.
Year3 (Intermediate2)
This is a continuous year linking from Year2 to Year3 as an Intermediate level which expands from the “Atmosphere” subject of Space and Time towards the higher degree of the “Tectonic formation” and its impact for Architectural design approach. Students will learn more in-depth on the design process in architecture and will learn about the reasons of “Site” “Functions” and “Uses”. This is the year that students will show their creative possibility through ways of experimenting and creating new kinds of proposed spatial design interventions. There are also related supportive subjects on Urbanism and History and Theory in Architecture including the Professional Practice knowledge for the preparation on professional internships or Co-operative Education.
Year4 (Final Year)
This is the final Year of the program that will let students to decide and assess his/her interests, skills, abilities and basic knowledge. There are 2-track system to choose for first semester, i.e. from a) an internship track; and b) a Cooperative Education track. After completion from each track, in the second semester, students will conduct his/her “Senior” Studio Project which will be the main core of learning and experimenting through the subjects of their choices. There are also core electives from the IDEA program to support their final Project. The deep core of philosophy/theory and innovative advanced architectural design process are significant value in the program and final presentation expecting the most creative as well as integrative approach to name but a few.
Advanced Placement Credits:
Polytechnic diploma or Transferring Students from other architectural schools can be granted advanced placement credits. This is subject to Program management team’s consideration with the satisfied English test scores for relevant undergraduate level of international standard.

Career Opportunities
The goal of this program is to produce highly qualified graduates that can meet the design challenges in the twenty-first century, where an increasing demand of interdisciplinary skills from digital fabrication, creative thinking to biomimicry are required to push the boundaries of architecture design. Graduates of the IDEA program will be educated and trained to become future leaders in design offices both in Thailand and worldwide. The interdisciplinary approach also means that upon graduating, the program will prepare students who wish to continue their graduate studies overseas.

The IDEA program is taught by a diverse team of architects and designers recruited from some of the most prestigious Architecture Schools across the world, these include Columbia University, Illinois Institute of Technology and University of Hawaii in the United States, Architectural Association, Bartlett School of Architecture and University of Westminster in the U.K, and Saga University in Japan. All our instructors are either practising architects or leading researchers with a wealth of design and building knowledge and research pedigree.
